AIMS Summer School 2016
Just home from Thurles and the AIMS Summer School. Avonmore was well represented by 10 amazingly talented young people. Some of them attending their first Summer School and sadly for some, due to age, it will be their last. So proud of all of them. Great ambassadors for Avonmore and themselves. Along with 58 other young members of AIMS representing societies from all over the island of Ireland they all ascended on Thurles to enhance their love of musical theatre. The concert tonight was of such a high standard it's hard to believe that it is the result of a couple of days work. Great credit must go to Director Peter Kennedy and Musical Director Mary Rose Mc Nally. For the past 20 years hundreds of talented young people have seen their love of musical theatre blossom under the care and encouragement of Peter and Mary Rose. Two legends in Irish Musical Theatre. And many have gone on to have careers in Musical Theatre in the West End and further afield. And to all the helpers, minders and AIMS summer school committee thank you so much for all you do. Hope everyone involved is so proud of what was achieved this week. The happiness and feel good factor in the room was unmeasurable. The standard is getting better every year. Long may the Summer School continue to thrive. It really is the jewel in AIMS Crown.
Special congratulations again to all from Avonmore, Emma McGeary, Anna Kenny, Seán O'Keeffe
, Orlagh Sunderland
, Laura Condren
, Eimear Harper, Sinead Byrne
, Olivia Sheehy
and Aoife Murphy
. So so proud of you all. You were all amazing on that stage.
xxx(Apologies to Laura. We missed you for the photo.
Avonmore start to
plan for 2017
the recent success at the AIMS Awards in Killarney, Avonmore Musical Society
are already planning for the season ahead. Although critically acclaimed with
good audiences and winning AIMS awards for Best Actress for Leah Penstons
portrayal of Evita and 3rd Place for Best Overall Show, sadly
“Evita” was not a financial success. We were carrying a loss
from last year’s production of “The Witches of Eastwick” which we hoped would clear this year but it was not to be. But not to be down heartened
Chairman Rob Donnelly and his newly elected committee of Secretary Jo Sheehy,
Treasurer Denise Connors, PRO Colm Moules and committee members Michael
Russell, Sean Hendley, Tomas Byrne and Rachel Kealy are already planning for
next year’s production with the firm intention of getting the society back in the
black. The society are also delighted to have Christine Nolan remain on board
as their Social Media Person. Christine takes care of the societies Facebook,
Twitter and Website. Avonmore have secured the services
again of their production team of Director Stephen Acton, Musical Director
Naoimh Penston and Choreographer Martina Lynch and will be announcing next
Easters production at the society’s annual Summer BBQ this weekend.
We have two big fundraisers coming up. The now famous “Strictly Come
Dancing” returns on October 15 in the Arklow Bay with Martina
Lynch again choreographing and instructing all the dancers. Tomas Byrne and
Sharon Kenny are the two other vital cogs that help keep “Strictly Come
Dancing” running smoothly. Any group or organisation who would like to
participate is asked to contact Martina, Tomas or Sharon, or ring 0868722010 or
message Avonmore on Facebook for further information. Please contact them asap.
They will try to accommodate as many groups as possible but numbers are
Also on Mon
25 and Tues 26 July Avonmore are delighted to bring
back “Showstoppers” to the Arklow Bay Hotel. The once annual event and
fundraiser for the society returns after a gap of 7 years. Due to popular
demand and financial reasons the society are delighted to have Musical Director
Naoimh Penston bring back the concerts which always contain the Best West End
and Broadway songs. There will be a cast of about 40 taking part aged from 8
upwards and a great night’s entertainment is promised. Rehearsals just started
this week and any past members who would like to come on board are asked to
We are also delighted to have Amy and Leah Penston perform with in these two
concerts before they head back to the UK to start rehearsing for the UK and
Irish Tour of West End show “The Commitment’s” which will be in the Bord Gais
Energy Theatre in October. Avonmore are so proud of the two girls and wish them
the very best for the year ahead.
Another Great Year for Avonmore with "Evita".
Although not a financial success, "Evita" was definitely well worth performing. We had great fun staging it , all who seen it seemed to have enjoyed it and we were delighted to receive 3 AIMS Award Nominations.
Leah Penston has been nominated for Best Actress
Chris Currid has been nominated for Best Male Singer

21st June 2015
It’s that time of year when we wrap up one season and start
planning for the next. We’ve had a great year starting with our Presidential
visit to the Aras, our Summer BBQ, Strictly Come Dancing, Carol Singing, our
visits to other shows around the country and the main reason for our existence our
Easter show “The Witches of Eastwick”. The show was a great success and
resulted in our Three Witches, Jennifer Lee, Naoimh Penston and Denise Brennan
being nominated for the Spirit of AIMS Award. Last Saturday 34 members were in
Killarney for the Awards Ceremony to cheer on the girls. They were runner up
for the award and we are really proud of them and all our friends who were
nominated and won on the night. Special congratulations to Brian O’Gorman who
won The Best Supporting Actor Award and to Paul Laycock and Rory Robinson who
won the Best Comedian’s Award.
Now it’s time to push on for next year. We’re having our AGM
on Wed 1 July at 8pm upstairs in Murphy’s Lounge. All our members
are invited and asked to attend. All info is on the attachment below.
5th June 2015
Apologies we've been off line for quite a while.
Roll on AIMS Weekend in Killarney
We had an amazing run with "The Witches of Eastwick". It was very well received by our audiences. It was a more adult themed show than our last few shows and this resulted in smaller numbers coming to see it. However we had great fun and it was a wonderful success. This was down to our hardworking cast and crew and a tireless committee who spent most of the last 12 months working behind the scenes to bring this show to the stage in Arklow. And already we are hard at work trying to select next years show so keep checking back on the website and we hope to announce our next show at the start of July.
Next weekend we will be attending the AIMS Awards in Killarney. 30 members of the society will be there to cheer on Jennifer Lee, Naoimh Penston and Denise Brennan who have been nominated for "The Spirit of AIMS Award" for their work on "The Witches of Eastwick" and as the Adjudicator put it 'For three selfless performances, blending together as a team in true ensemble playing'. Best Wishes Girls.
We will also be cheering on our Director Bill Stafford who has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role of Herod with New Ross in their production of "Jesus Christ Superstar". Bill will be up against Brian O'Gorman who has been nominated in the same category for his role of Charles Guiteau in "Assassins".
And we will be cheering on Chris Currid in his absence as he is nominated for Best Male Singer for his role of Judas in Oyster Lne's production of "Jesus Christ Superstar". Chris is up against another friend of Avonmore's Dave Latham.
Congratulations to our Darryl, Paul Laycock
and Rory Robinson who are nominated for Best Comedian in "Kiss Me Kate".
To John Young and all our friends in Carnew Congratulations on the nominations for "A Christmas Carol". Best wishes and congrats to Shane Fox
, Patrick James McElwain
and all in Trim on their nominations for "The Addams Family"
I'm sorry if I forgot anyone. Roll on Killarney!!!

First off we welcome back our production team:
Bill Stafford - Director
Mairead McKenna- Musical Director
Martina Lynch- Choreographer
and lyrics by John Dempsey
Based on the novel by John Updike and the Warner Bros. Motion Picture
Music by Dana P. Rowe
In the tiny New England town of Eastwick, Rhode Island, three modern day witches innocently plot and conjure over a heady brew of weak martinis and peanut butter brownies. But when their longings are made flesh in the arrival of one Darryl Van Horne, all hell breaks loose. Quite literally.
Dana Rowe and John Dempsey’s stage musical of the smash hit movie, was originally produced at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and Prince of Wales Theatre by Cameron Mackintosh during 2000 and 2001. The show was re-written for a successful UK tour which starred Marti Pellow.
Audition dates and information will be announced very soon so please keep an eye on our Facebook page and website.

What a day we had on St Patrick's Day. The sun shone, no rain fell and Arklow had one of the biggest crowds and best parades for many a year.
Rob Donnelly led the way as Grand Marshall followed right behind by the cast of the Addams Family and Masquerade Drama Group.
The members of both groups got into the spirit of the day and had fun all along the route.
Avonmore were the winners of the Most Entertaining Group. Well done everyone.

It was probably the biggest show we have undertaken and we pulled it off. :)
The feedback we received from everyone has been amazing. It is still the talk of the town so Thank You to everyone who contributed in any way at all during the year to it's success.
It was not a financial success but we still hope to get near to breakeven.
Last weekend we were delighted to receive

Rehearsals well underway
Rehearsals are going really well with most of the cast rehearsing 3 nights a week. "Beauty and the Beast" is a very big show and this amount of rehearsal is warranted. Our production team of Bill Stafford, Mairead Mc Kenna and Martina Lynch are working so hard with our cast and crew to ensure that the magic of Disney is what's on display form Tues 2nd to 6th April.
However it's not just rehearsals that are needed to bring to stage such a big Disney production as "Beauty and the Beast".
Just to remind you all.
Mick Russell and Tomas Byrne are working hard on building our set.
Els Penston assisted by Brid Maloney are sourcing costumes. Sharon Kavanagh will be looking after hair and make-up. Barry Ryan is preparing his stage crew.
Our President Padraig Reid will as usual look after our lighting displays.
Jim Furlong will have his front of house crew ready.
So all the technical side is coming along nicely.
However again it will cost a lot of money to stage "Beauty and the Beast". We are delighted to have the Fogarty family of Topline Bolands as our Main Sponsor. But it will cost us about €40,000 to stage the show and the Rob and all the committee are currently seeking financial support to cover this amount.
The society are holding a Grand Prize Draw which will take place on the final night of "Beauty and the Beast". Tickets are priced at €2 each or a book of 3 for €5.
Prizes are 1st prize - €500 Cash
2nd prize - €100 Voucher for Bridgewater Shopping Centre.
3rd prize - €100 Voucher for TRTV
4th prize - €100 Voucher for Pettitts.
Tickets are available from most members of the society.

Beauty and the Beast
Hello everyone. Apologies for that fact that I have not updated the website in a while (3 months :(....Sorry ).
However I can assure you Avonmore is still very much in existence and raring to go for the year ahead and updates will be regular from now on.
Looking at the the post below it reminds me of the great success that "The Wizard of Oz" was and we have every intention of making next years show as memorable and hopefully as successful.
To bring you up to speed:
We held our AGM in the Arklow Bay Hotel on the 5th July. Last years committee were happy to stay on and were reelected on mass. As we only had 5 members on committee last year it meant we had three vacant places to fill. Lucy Hayes, Sean Hendley and Sharon Kenny all agreed to take the vacant places and our committee for the year ahead is now as follows:
Chairman: Rob Donnelly ( I know....Not again)
Hon Secretary: Fiona Walker
Hon Treasurer: Kerry Reid
Public Relations Officer (P.R.O): Tomas Byrne
Technical Director: Mick Russell
Lucy Hayes, Sean Hendley and Sharon Kenny
Our Next Production is going to be
"Beauty and the Beast"
Tues 2nd to Sat 6th April 2013
This is a massive undertaking for Avonmore but a really exciting one and we have plans well underway.
We are delighted to retain the services of Director Bill Stafford, Musical Director Mairead Mc Kenna and Choreographer Martina Lynch. This will be the 4th show together for these three and they have been a joy to work with over the last three years and we know this year will be no different.
I will give you some brief details to keep you going but I will elaborate and give more information really soon.
1) Auditions will be held for main parts on Thursday Oct 11th
2) We will be looking for one boy between the ages of 8 and 11 to play the part of "Chip".

3) Rehearsals will be on Tues, Thurs and Sundays from 7.30 to 9.30pm. They will start on Tues 20th November and continue until Thurs 6th Dec. Then we will restart in early Jan.
The early start is due to the size of the show, Easter is early next year and all of the cast must be measured for costumes which have to be ordered before Christmas.
"Strictly Come Dancing" is returning on Sat 17th November. More details will be posted soon. Tomas Byrne and Niamh Dunne are organising again so a great night is guaranteed.
Thats all for now. Great to be back.
Talk to you real soon. I promise!!!!!!

Success for Avonmore
For the third year in a row Avonmore Musical Society of Arklow had a very successful weekend at the AIMS HB Awards in the INEC in Killarney. 22 members of the society travelled down with 5 nominations for their recent production of "The Wizard of Oz". Avonmore won the Award for Best Stage Management- Manager Barry Ryan (collected by Tomas Byrne) and 2nd place for the Best Overall Show (collected by Rob Donnelly). Amy Penston was runner up in the Best Actress category, Bill Stafford runner up in the Best Director and Avonmore were runner up for Best Visual show (collected by Els Penston).
Last year Amy Penston won the AIMS HB Award for Best Supporting Actress for playing the part of Holly in Avonmore’s “The Wedding Singer” and the Award returns home to the Penston house this year as Amy’s mother Naoimh won the Award this year for playing the part of the Witch in the Talbot & Brady StageBratz production of “Into The Woods” which took place in Bray. This was Naoimh’s second AIMS Award having won the Best Actress Award in 2004 for playing the part of Lola in Avonmore’s production of “Copacabana”. Naoimh was also runner up this year for Best Singer for playing the part of Sally with Wexford Light Opera Society in their production of “Follies”.
Avonmore Chairman Rob Donnelly was delighted with the society’s results at the weekend and said to win the Award for Second place for Best Overall Show is recognition of the amount of hard work that all members of the society put in to bring top quality musical productions to Arklow. He can’t wait to get working on next year’s production.
1.000 people attended the ceremony at the weekend, which is the nearest equivalent we have to the Oscars and despite the awful weather a great weekend was had by all. This brings Avonmore to the end of the current season and following the upcoming AGM it will be full steam ahead as they plan for next Easter.
Chairman Rob Donnelly receiving the award for Second Place for Best Overall show from AIMS President Richard Lavery & AIMS Vice President Olive Melville in the INEC in Killarney last weekend.

21st April 2012
This time last week we were getting ready for our matinee performance. It was the first matinee Avonmore had performed in nearly 20 years. What a wonderful experience it was. The hall was full of amazing children and their friends and families and it was truly magical to see their reactions to all that happened on stage. They really got drawn into the performance and to feel the atmosphere from the hall as they clapped and sang along was something really special.
We finished our week off on saturday night to another great audience and within 1 hour of finishing the stage was returned as we found it 2 weeks earlier. "The Wizard of OZ" was a great success for Avonmore. It really was a fantastic week in St Mary's.
Thank You to all who worked hard to make it into the success it was.
What would you like us to do next?????????????????
14th April 2012
It's the last day. 2 shows to go and it's all over. We've had some journey down our yellow brick road. The Avonmore is one big family with over 100 people working together to make something special happen for 1 week after Easter every year.
Thank you to everyone for all their hard work to make "The Wizard of Oz" happen. I hope you all enjoyed the experience.
We have some tickets available for the last 2 performances. The booking office will not open today because we have the matinee on but you can make phone bookings on 0868722010.
11th April 2012
WE'RE FOLLOWING THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD
Well done everyone. A great opening night. You all worked so hard.I hope you all enjoyed it. Congratulations to everyone from front of house to back stage and everywhere inbetween on a job well done.
We had a brilliant crowd last night and hopefully this will continue for the rest of the week.
Please spread the word.
7th April 2012
We're nearly there. 2 more rehearsals to go. The work in St Mary's has not stopped all week with everyone working so hard to make "The Wizard of Oz" as magical as possible. We've had a lot of late late nights but it's necessary and we'll rest monday week.
Tomas Byrne and Mick Russell have made a wonderful set to transport us from Kansas to Munchkinland to The Emerald City and some weird and wonderful places in between. We have numerous painters who have added the extra magic onto the sets. Paidraig Reid's Lighting, Els Penston's Costumes, Sharon Kavanagh's Hair and Make Up & Barry Ryans Stage Management all add the final pieces to the jigsaw. And we have our double AIMS Award winning Front of House team under MC Jim Furlongs guidance ensuring evrything runs on time.
However without the hard work of our Production Team of Bill Stafford, Mairead Mc Kenna and Martina Lynch plus our cast who have worked tirelessly it wouldnt be possible. Thanks Everyone.
I personally want to thank Kerry Reid, Fiona Walker, Tomas Byrne and Mick Russell on committee who have spent the last 10 months working on this show. It's time to see the fruits of your labour.
2 Rehearsals to go
Sat 7th April: Jitterbug at 5-30pm
Everyone else in at 6pm for hair and makeup. Full run of show tonight.
Sunday 8th April: NO REHEARSAL
Monday 9th: Everyone in at 1pm. Full Hair and Make Up. Full Costume. Full run.
We dont know what time we will finish on monday. When show is over on monday, the production team will need to talk to everyone for about an hour so we will send a text to everyone giving an hour's notice when rehearsal is finished so that children can be collected. It should be around 7pm
1st April 2012
It's April Fool's Day and we have a long day's work ahead. Mick Russell, Tomas Byrne and crew worked hard into the early hours this morning on the set and by this evening we should have a good idea of the spectacle that "The Wizard of Oz" will be. Along with Padraig's lights, Els' costumes and Sharon's Make Up not too mention the work by our fantastic production team of Bill, Mairead and Martina plus our amazing cast I promise you "The Wizard of Oz" is a show not to be missed. Here's to a long day but a good one. See you all later.

What an Amazing St Patrick's Day !!!
The sky eventually cleared and we spent St Patrick's Day the way we normally do by dressing up and taking part in the St Patrick's Day Parade. It always proves a great way of advertising our upcoming show. Yesterday was all the more special as we won the Award for Best Non-Commercial Group and we made our first appearance on RTE News.
Congratulations to The Parade Committee, Jimmy Russell, Denis Naughter and Peter Kearns who organised a wonderful parade which really displayed the marvellous community spirit that exists in the town and surrounding areas.
Many Thanks to all who turned up and walked with us in the Parade.
I hope you all enjoyed it.
Thanks to Lucy and all in P Boland's for their help.
Thanks to Colm Penston for driving and providing us with a PA to play our music.
Fiona Walker &Tomas Byrne
(The Wicked Witch & Scarecrow)
Thanks to Mick Russell and Tomas Byrne for doing, what they always do, whatever is needed to make sure things run smoothly. They never let us down.
A special word of thanks to Els Penston for sourcing and making the great costumes for yesterday &
to Sharon Kavanagh for her amazing work on Make Up.
Congratulations to all our leads who looked stunning and really sold "The Wizard of OZ" for us yesterday.
3 Weeks to go.

To stage this show is going to cost €35,000. A lot of money but necessary to stage the quality of show we wish to perform and the high standard that our audiences expect. To help offset some of this we have some fundraising events on going which I hope you can support.
We have 2 draws underway.
The childrens chorus received a sheet for the 500 to 1 Draw. This sheet consists of 20 lines which are €2 each. The prize is €500 and the draw will be made the week of the show.

"Strictly Come Dancing" was a resounding success last night. Over 500 people crammed into the Arklow Bay Hotel to support the Celebrity Dancers and the Charities & Local Groups they were representing.
The standard of dancing was very high and all the contestants had been rehearsing really hard for the past number of weeks. Congratulations to all the competitors.
Ann Walker representing the Arklow Viking Special Olympics and Avonmore Chairman Rob Donnelly were the overall winners. Marion Galvin representing the Arklow Rocks and her dance partner Tomas Byrne were the runners up.
The presenters for the evening were Jim Furlong and Elaine Sweeney and they ensured the evening went without a hitch. The judges were Proud Prizzy, Martina Lynch and Colm Moules and they were cheered and booed by the large crowd depending on their scores. Kerry Reid and Mick Russell manned the door and Sean Hendley was also there to help out. Kane Molloy and Amy Penston looked after sound and Society President Padraig Reid was there to keep an eye on proceedings.
Chairman Rob Donnelly thanked Niamh Dunne and Tomas Byrne who were the organisers of the event and said that "Strictly Come Dancing" would not have happened without their drive and determination.
He also thanked Martina Lynch for all her help and for the use of "Studio 55" for all the couples to rehearse in.
